Signs Your Stucco May Need Repair
Most stucco problems are visible from the ground long before they become expensive. These are the ones worth walking your exterior to check.
Cracking
Fine hairline crazing is normal as stucco cures. Cracks you can fit a fingernail into, or that keep opening season to season, are letting water into the wall.
Bulging or soft spots
Stucco that sounds hollow when tapped, or flexes under pressure, has lost its bond to what's behind it.
Staining and discolouration
Dark streaks below windows, sills or roof lines usually mean water is running somewhere it shouldn't and getting behind the finish.
Chips, holes and missing sections
Impact damage and woodpecker holes are small problems that stop being small once winter drives water into the opening.
Damage at the base of the wall
Deterioration where the stucco meets grade often has more to do with drainage and splash-back than with the stucco itself.
Previous repairs that stand out
Patches that don't match in texture or colour tend to be a sign the underlying cause was never dealt with.
Any one of these tells you something is happening — none of them tells you what. Cracking from ordinary curing, from a drainage problem, and from movement behind the wall can look identical from outside, and they don't get the same repair. Repair or Replace?
Repair usually makes sense when…
- — The damage is localised: a cracked section, a chipped corner, holes.
- — The stucco is still firmly bonded everywhere except the damaged area.
- — The cause is understood and fixable — a flashing detail, a drainage issue.
Recoating or replacement, when…
- — Cracking and hollow areas are spread across whole elevations.
- — The wall has been patched repeatedly and the same problems keep returning.
- — Water has been getting behind the stucco long enough to affect what's underneath.
There's also an honest middle answer we give fairly often: patching one elevation will work and will not match. Existing stucco has weathered, and new material next to it shows. If matching matters to you, that's a reason to recoat a full elevation rather than a section — and it's a decision worth making before the work starts, not after.

We look at the whole exterior
Not just the spot you called about. Stucco damage frequently shows up somewhere other than where the water is getting in.
Two
We look for the cause
Flashing, sills, grade, drainage, and how sound the existing coat is. Repairing a symptom without the cause buys a season or two, and we'd rather say so.
Three
You get a scope, in writing
What we'd do, what finish it is, and where the limits are — including anything we can't tell for certain until the coat comes off.
