Brick Repair Services
Replacing damaged brick
Cutting out spalled, cracked or crumbling units and setting replacements. The constraint is almost always matching the existing brick — colour, size and texture — closely enough that the repair doesn't read as a patch.
Rebuilding failed sections
Where an area has moved or deteriorated past repointing, the sound brick comes down and goes back up properly rather than being patched over.
Crack repair
Repairing cracked brickwork so the wall sheds water again. Where a crack looks like movement rather than weathering, we'll say so — filling that kind of crack hides it without fixing it.
Foundation-level brick and stone
The lowest courses take the most water and usually fail first. We do remove-and-replace work at foundation level, and it often pairs with parging on the exposed foundation below it.
Tuckpointing & Mortar Joint Repair
Tuckpointing — also called repointing — means removing the deteriorated mortar from the joints and packing in fresh mortar. The brick stays where it is. It's the most common repair a brick wall in Calgary needs, and it's the one most often left too long.
Step one
Rake out the old joint
The failed mortar is cut back to sound material — deep enough that the new mortar has something to hold, not just a skim over the top of the problem.
Step two
Match the mortar
Mix and colour are matched to the existing work. On older brick this matters twice over: a mortar that's harder than the brick will damage the brick faces instead of wearing itself.
Step three
Pack, tool and cure
Joints are filled in layers, tooled to match the original profile, and given proper curing time. Rushing the cure is how repointing fails in its first winter.

Common Brick Damage in Calgary
Freeze-thaw is the main driver here. Chinooks mean a Calgary wall doesn't freeze once and stay frozen — it thaws and refreezes repeatedly through the winter. Any water sitting in a joint or behind a brick face expands each time.
The visible results are consistent: mortar that has eroded back or turned to powder, brick faces spalling off, and cracking that opens a little further each season. Efflorescence — white salt deposits on the surface — is the wall telling you water is moving through it.
What none of that establishes is the cause. Deteriorated joints, drainage getting water where it shouldn't be, and actual structural movement can all look similar from the sidewalk, and they don't get the same repair. That's what the on-site estimate is for — we look at the wall before quoting a scope, not after.
When Brick Repair Is Needed
You don't need a contractor to tell you whether it's worth a look. These are the things worth checking yourself.
Mortar you can scrape out
If a key or a screwdriver takes mortar out of the joint as powder or loose grit, the joint has lost its binding and water is already getting behind the face.
Faces flaking or popping off
Spalling — the outer face of a brick shearing away — usually means water got in and froze. The brick underneath is exposed and weathers much faster.
Recessed or missing joints
Joints that have eroded well back from the brick face, or gaps where mortar is simply gone, are the ones that let the wall take on water.
Cracks that follow a line
Stair-step cracking through the joints, or cracks that keep opening season after season, are worth having looked at rather than filled.
White staining on the brick
Efflorescence — chalky white deposits on the surface — means water is moving through the masonry and carrying salts out with it.
Damp or crumbling interior walls
Moisture showing up on the inside of an exterior brick wall points at the wall assembly, and that's worth checking before it gets more expensive.
Repointing is far cheaper than rebuilding. The reason to look at it early is that once water has been getting into the wall for a few seasons, the job stops being about mortar and starts being about brick.
Brick Restoration
Calgary has a lot of older brick that is fundamentally sound and simply worn. Restoration work is about keeping it — matching the existing brick and mortar closely enough that the wall reads as original once the repair has weathered in.
Older brick is generally softer than modern brick, which changes the mortar decision. A hard modern mix in a soft brick wall transfers stress into the brick faces and damages what it was supposed to protect. Getting that match right is most of the craft.
